Chilika Lake – The largest brackish water lake in Eastern India

Chilika (or Chilka) lake is the largest lake of the country. The lake is surrounded with scenic beauty of nature. The naval training center is also situated nearby. Several types of migratory birds visit Chilika with advent of different seasons (mostly Winter). The lake is declared as a ‘Bird Sanctuary’ by the state govt. Inside the lake there are numerous islands, and one such picturesque island is called Kalijai, which hosts ‘Kalijai Temple’, an important place of worship for the surrounding population.

AIR

Bhubaneswar is the nearest airport, with good connections to all the important metros of India (Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Kolkata, Hyderabad, etc.). It is 105 km from Barkul, 130 km from Rambha, 110 km from Satapada, and 100 km from Balugaon.

RAIL

The Howrah-Chennai route of the South—Eastern Railway passes close to Chilika lake, with stations at Balugaon, Chilika, Khalikote and Rambha.

ROAD

National Highway No. 5, connecting Kolkata and Chennai, runs close to Chilika lake, through Balugaon, Barakul and Rambha. Buses and taxis to Chilika are available in Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Puri and Berhampur.

Middle of October to middle of March is the best time in the year to visit Chilika Lake, Odisha.
